    Defining Unity

In Florida’s Republican Party, like many around the country, we are told that unity is always supporting the Republican Candidate who wins their primary race. When attending Republican Party functions, we are told that we are to “come together at election time” by the leaders of the party. It is rare, however, that these same party leaders do not see their candidate win in the primary. The win allows them, with immunity, to demand total support for the candidate that so many in the grassroots were working to defeat, which often leaves these workers in a state of utter confusion and wondering how they can be expected to so drastically change their support. In the case of Governor Charlie Crist, many of the Republican Party leadership, who knew exactly what Charlie stood for, supported him and his decisions to the end. That end, of course, was when Charlie changed parties, and now Charlie is despised. He has become a talking point for Republicans in the 2010 state elections for what is wrong with Florida; however, many of those same Republicans supported and demanded that others support him before his party change. Did Charlie’s actions or beliefs change? Did Charlie suddenly morph into someone that aspired to beliefs that were not in line with the Republican Party? The Answer is no. Charlie did not change; rather, simply his affiliation with the Republican Party changed. In Duval county we have a mayor that claims to be a Republican, yet has proposed tax increases the last two years. These increases were supported by the mostly Republican City Council, but were protested by many of the hardworking, grassroots people of Duval County. Meanwhile both years the Republican Party leadership declined to participate in the discussion, because to do so would have been to go against a fellow Republican. What issue pertains more to the Republican Party than low taxes? Yet, Republican leaders would rather remain silent, then true to principles. At a time when so many within both parties are disenfranchised and ready for another option, perhaps demanding loyalty to a party is short sighted. It is because of these types of demands that so many organizations and groups have sprung up. From the Tea Parties and 912 groups to the Republican Liberty Caucus and Campaign for Liberty, these groups are now standing for what the Republican Party was always supposed to be: The Party that represented small, limited, Constitutional Government, less taxes, a strong national defense, and State and National Sovereignty. Now is the time to examine the political system to determine if, perhaps, the idea of loyalty to an organization or party, that often asks the people to dismiss their personal convictions and standards and offer their blind loyalty to the title “Republican”, is somehow missing the big picture. Does supporting someone like Charlie Crist, only to have them prove that they have always stood for different principles, lend credibility to the Republican Party leadership? Many serving on the executive committee take a loyalty oath to support the party. This oath has often been enforced with a stern hand. Meanwhile, who is enforcing the oath to the Constitution that our elected officials take? Should their failure to uphold their own oath to their constituents void any oath to unconditionally support them? They have forgotten that they serve the people, and their primary duty is to uphold the US Constitution. If we continue to blindly support them, forcing loyalty on those working to get them elected, we are creating an infrastructure that will collapse on itself. To pretend that America’s problems started the day that Obama was sworn into office is to dismiss the damage that Republicans, such as John McCain and Olympia Snow, have been doing to the party for years. It was the Republican Party that supported them and enabled them to continue their harmful ways without accountability. The Party needs to figure out what it stands for and what it stands against so that the people working to get “Republicans” candidates elected in the fall will know exactly what these candidates stand for. Organizations such as the Republican Liberty Caucus stand for accountability within the party at all levels and with every elected official. When officials fail to uphold their oath to the Constitution, or to support the principles that the stated Republican platforms claims to uphold, they deserve to be called out and in turn voted out. If those in party leadership would unite under principles, they could harness the growing power of the Tea Parties, the RLC, the 912 groups, and thousands of disenfranchised voters. Now is the time to decide if uniting under a title is more important than returning this country to its roots and seeing real change take place in our cities, counties, states, and Nation.

RLCNEF Phone Calls for 2010 Election - 9/23 6:00 pm

We all love our monthly meetings and the popularity shows with our growing organization and numbers every month. But, as you are aware, social events and meetings only support the bigger goal of getting good conservative candidates elected to office. Are you ready to kick your activist organization up to the next level? Do you understand the strategic value of building coalitions with other groups, growing the Party as a whole, and increasing voter numbers in our favor? If so, now may be the time for you to get involved in a very specific activity that will help move the message of liberty into the mainstream. We have been requested to help out at the Jax GOP HQ with phone calls to potential voters. (Our RLC leadership has made it clear that we are a principled group that has clearly defined boundaries for what we will and won't do.) Fortunately, our good friend, Duval County Republican State Committeeman Rick Hartley has graciously agreed to a script that will not require us to support candidates that do not meet our standards! So, Thursday evening, 9/23, we'll be crowding the Jax GOP HQ on Beach Blvd. to reach out to folks to grow the Republican Party....come be a part of it! Let's show the GOP that the RLC is all about action. We have stood in opposition to candidates and issues that do not promote liberty - but this is our chance to demonstrate that we value team work and are willing to contribute anywhere that we find common ground. Call me for more information at (904) 201-9135 In Liberty, Mike Ryan Date & Time: September 23, 2010, 6:00 PM Location: GOP Headquarters 4963 Beach Blvd Jacksonville, FL

Candidates Give Lessons From the Front Lines

True to form for the RLC of Northeast Florida, over 100 members and guests were treated to another great monthly meeting topic - Liberty Rising: Lessons From the Front Lines. The meeting opened with a sporting event-like atmosphere complete with music and video as 10 Republican Liberty candidates from all over the state of Florida were honored. They were recognized for the sacrifices they made in spreading the liberty message by running for office in the 2010 GOP Primaries. In attendance was Alan Kelso, FL House Dist 20, Nathan McDonell, FL House Dist 26, Luis Melendez, FL House Dist 16, Matt Nye, Brevard County Commission Dist. 4, Gary Oliveras, Duval County School Board Dist 6, Dr. Charles Perniciaro, FL State Senate Dist 8, Marcus Rivchin Jr., FL House Dist 117, Francisco Rodriguez, FL House Dist 83, Roger Shealy, FL House Dist 29 and Mike Yost, US Congressional Dist 3. The nights main topic featured a fantastic lineup of guest speakers addressing subjects fitting for the times. After a very active primary campaign season, four candidates shared their experiences on the campaign trail and provided excellent advice for anyone who is thinking about a run for office someday. Setup panel-style and moderated by the RLCs own Kristi Dunn, each of the candidates were given a few minutes to tell us what worked and what didnt work in their campaigns, including:

    • Carey Baker and his wise counsel to prospective candidates not to underestimate the importance of being well-funded
    • Joe Kennedy on changing the conversation from issues that really dont matter to the ones which really do.
    • Nathan McDonell on the power of keeping a positive attitude and advancing a consistent message
    • Francisco Rodriguez and his 4-point plan to consider before investing time and money as a candidate for public office.

Of course, the RLC does not stop there! Details on the RLCNEFs 3rd Annual Constitution Day Celebration set for Friday Night, September 17th were discussed and included a video promotion by the featured guest, Jack Hunter aka The Southern Avenger. Chuck White and Senator Carey Baker gave informative updates on Amendments 4 and 9 respectively, and Glorious Johnson wrapped up our featured presentation with an encouraging message about her commitment to represent everybody as a public servant. A tremendous thank you goes to our panel guests and everyone who helped make this the most successful RLC event to date! Here's what some attendees had to say: "A very informative and motivating political experience. This is a great group of people whose dedication to Liberty is unflinching and are bound to do great work." - Josh Clements

With this goal in mind, the RLC is very pleased to welcome back Rebecca O’Dell as our featured speaker this month. Rebecca delivers a dynamic lesson in American history & civics. Join us for a very important presentation on our current constitutional crises and what needs to be done to regain control of our government.

Bob Veit, chairman of the county's Republican Executive Committee, said last week that The Republican Liberty Caucus, a national organization of libertarian-minded Republicans, has formed a new St. John County chapter that seems to be seeking control of the committee.

Veit said the Caucus wasn't doing anything illegal, but it wants to put supporters into vacant precinct leader positions and thereby influence the composition of the Executive Committee to press its agenda.

"(The Caucus is) attempting a hostile takeover," Veit said. "It's a threat. What happens to all the centrist and less-conservative Republicans who don't agree with them?"

    He called Caucus members "ultra-conservatives."

William G. Pitts of St. Johns, a successful builder and a founder of the local Caucus chapter, disagrees with Veit.

Pitts said his members aren't planning a takeover or coup. They are applying for the vacant precinct slots because the Executive Committee was "effectively blocking" them from serving due to their political beliefs. The committee had passed restrictive new rules, changed the requirements of membership and delayed or tabled applications from Caucus members to keep them off, Pitts said.

"We're puzzled why, in a time when the Republican Party faces serious problems, they want to become a party of exclusion," Pitts said. "(The Caucus doesn't) want to exclude people. We represent traditional Republican Party values of low taxes, individual responsibility, states rights and the Constitution. I believe most people in St. Johns County believe in these principles."
